I grew up in Southern California and began traveling while in college. At the time the airlines allowd you to fly 'student standby' at really low rates, making impromptu student travel easy. On a summer trip to New England I met my husband, a native Bostonian, who was a friend of an old roommate's ex-boyfriend (this is how we used to meet new people in the days before social media). We have been exploring together ever since.
After raising our family in California we both left the business world and headed to Vermont where we bought the Hill Farm Inn, a sixteen-room bed and breakfast built around the heart of a two-hundred year-old dairy farm. The inn came with fifty idyllic acres of protected open space, a huge old barn and an assortment of farm animals.
Between serving a cooked-to-order breakfast for up to 38 guests and all the other myriad details of innkeeping, we found refuge, once or twice a year, in the most relaxing and reinvigorating vacations we could think of -- cruising to far-away places. We visited Asia, Australia, Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, the Caribbean and Central and North America. We would then spend the long Vermont winters leafing through travel brochures depicting all the other places we longed to visit.
After ten years in Vermont we felt the pull of family back in California, so we sold Hill Farm Inn to head west again. I wasn't so sure, however, about how I would do going from the jammed packed life of 24/7 innkeeping to the quiet life of an early retirement. I began the search for another endeavor to keep busy, something that I could get really excited about. The search didn't lead very far away, as we both decided to stay in the travel industry. Our travel business let's us combine what we loved best about innkeeping -- the people -- with our passion for travel.
